In this chapter we present a panoramic view of the main contributions that pluricentrism has made and continues to make to the study of languages with more than one referential variety of formal language. This view does not attempt to dodge the controversial aspects and limitations of some aspects of pluricentrism in its beginnings, a proposal that originated in European linguistics, so the axiom of a single standard for each language came into question. Moreover, it goes on to focus on the social aspects involved in standardization, which are generally more decisive than the linguistic structure itself. The chapter also gives a proposal for research questions arising from the intersection of pluricentrism with critical sociolinguistics and cognitive sociolinguistics. As is logical, this proposal has arisen from the conviction that the pluricentric perspective has a great deal to contribute to the study of the attitudinal, ideological, and social factors that influence the processes of standardization and re-standardization of languages with more than one proposal for formal use, including pluricentric languages in conflict.
